Driver's license translations come up in three common scenarios: applying for a U.S. license while your foreign license is still valid, providing identity to USCIS or DMV, or proving lawful presence at certain state agencies.

We translate the front and back of the license including class, restrictions, issue and expiration dates, and any endorsements — formatted so DMV examiners can match the translation to your foreign license at a glance.

What USCIS uses it for

Identity documentation in I-485 supporting evidence, DMV exchanges in states like California and New York, and supplementary identity proof for I-9 employment verification.

What we translate

  • Both sides of the license, including class codes and restrictions
  • Endorsements (commercial, motorcycle, hazardous materials)
  • International Driving Permits (IDPs) issued in your home country
8 CFR §103.2(b)(3)

What USCIS requires for a foreign-language document

  • Full English translation

Every word, stamp, seal, and marginal note on the foreign document must be rendered into English — not summarized.

  • Signed Certificate of Accuracy

The translator certifies, in writing, that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate from the source language to English.

  • Original visible alongside translation

USCIS expects the certified English translation to be submitted together with a legible copy of the original foreign-language document.

  • Independent translator

The translator cannot be the applicant or beneficiary. Self-translations are routinely rejected, even when accurate.

Why these translations get rejected

Class code translated as the U.S. equivalent

Don't translate Class B (commercial in some countries) as 'Class C' (the U.S. private auto class). Translate the original code and let the DMV do the mapping.

Frequently asked questions

State rules vary. Most states allow tourists and short-term visitors to drive with a valid foreign license plus a certified English translation or International Driving Permit. Long-term residents typically need to obtain a state license.
